Over the past few years, Leica’s presence in the smartphone world has largely come through partnerships, lending its imaging expertise and lenses to devices from Huawei and Sharp. That is why it comes as a pleasant surprise to see the German camera maker take a more decisive step with the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi. As the name suggests, Leica still works with a technology partner to bring the device to market, but this time the initiative clearly carries its own signature rather than simply supplying optics and branding.
The Leitzphone is positioned as a serious photographic tool rather than just another premium smartphone. Leica’s design philosophy is immediately evident, as the device follows the brand’s familiar principle of reduction to the essential, combining a black glass-fibre rear panel with a precisely knurled silver aluminium frame. The iconic red dot sits proudly on the back, while a mechanical camera ring introduces a tactile way of interacting with the camera, allowing users to control zoom, exposure, ISO and focal length in a manner closer to a traditional Leica camera.
At the core of the phone is a sophisticated triple-camera system built around Leica’s optical standards. The 23 mm main camera features a 50 MP sensor designed to deliver broad dynamic range and reliable low-light performance. A periscope telephoto module offers optical zoom from 75 mm to 100 mm, supported by a large 200 MP sensor that captures impressive detail for portraits and distant subjects. Completing the setup is a 14 mm ultra-wide lens with 50 MP resolution and a close-focus capability of just 5 cm, opening up striking perspectives.
Photography is supported by Leica’s distinctive visual language. The camera interface has been developed by Leica’s own design team and includes 13 Leica Looks and five signature bokeh styles inspired by classic Leica lenses. A dedicated Essential Mode recreates the aesthetic character of legendary cameras such as the Leica M9, offering photographers a deliberate and focused shooting experience.
Behind the scenes, Xiaomi provides the technological backbone. The device runs on Xiaomi HyperOS 3 and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform, ensuring strong performance and efficient power management. A large 6,000 mAh battery, 90 W fast charging, and a 6.9-inch LTPO OLED display complete the flagship specification. Priced at HK$11,999, the Leitzphone promises a distinctly Leica approach to everyday photography.
