The Final Salute
Urwerk UR-120 Blue Planet Edition

The Urwerk UR-120 has always felt like a watch from another world, and now its journey is coming to an end. The newly unveiled UR-120 Blue Planet marks the third and final chapter of the model, bringing the series to a close with a striking combination of deep blue tones, golden highlights, and the space-age design language that’s become one of Urwerk’s signatures.

The Blue Planet draws inspiration from both Earth viewed from orbit and the boundless depths of space. Its sandblasted steel case measures 47 mm wide, 44 mm long, and 15.8 mm thick, giving it a substantial presence on the wrist. The two-part case construction, a design approach favoured by Urwerk co-founder and artistic director Martin Frei, combines a protective lower structure with a smooth upper shell that appears almost seamless. Together with the domed sapphire crystal and articulated lugs, the watch resembles a miniature spacecraft more than a traditional timepiece.

Beneath the crystal sits one of the most distinctive displays in modern watchmaking. The self-winding Calibre UR-20.01 uses three satellite hour indicators mounted on a rotating carousel. As each satellite reaches the left side of the dial, its two rectangular arms separate to form a V-shape inspired by the famous Vulcan salute from Star Trek, which is an exceptionally complex mechanism to execute. The carousel alone contains 175 components, while lyre-shaped springs and Maltese crosses carefully control the opening and closing sequence of the satellites.

The deep blue architecture is complemented by 24K yellow-gold PVD-coated components that highlight the active mechanical elements responsible for storing and releasing energy throughout the movement. Rather than serving a purely decorative role, the gold accents draw attention to the watch’s engineering.

Power reserve stands at 48 hours, while the watch is paired with a blue Cordura-textured calfskin strap. As the final UR-120 variant, the Blue Planet arrives as a fitting farewell to one of Urwerk’s most imaginative creations, with production limited to just 20 examples.
