Singer’s Glorious Inspiration
Singer Type 964 Porsche 911 DLS Turbo

Porsche 911 restoration and modification specialist Singer has incorporated turbocharging into its Dynamics & Lightweighting Study (DLS) as part of the latest services it offers discerning customers. The new DLS Turbo offering celebrates the victorious 934/5 endurance racers of the late 1970s.

The original turbocharged 930 Porsche 911 was introduced in the mid-1970s, and the Type 934/5 was the racing variant with boxed hips, gaping intakes, and a massive rear wing first seen in 1977. The car won the 1977 SCCA Trans American series championship, and later famously the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979.

The DLS Turbo modification is available for Type 964 air-cooled 911s produced between 1989 and 1994. Once Singer has received the donor vehicle, the whole car is stripped down to a bare chassis, ensuring a completely clean slate for the restoration to begin. The original engine is disassembled and restored to a 3.8-litre, 4-valves-per-cylinder flat-six with twin turbochargers using Singer’s components and in-house technology, resulting in a power output of over 700 hp.

The modified carbon fibre body features a central front intake and hood vent for optimised cooling performance, plus rear fender intakes and NACA ducts that aid brake and turbocharger cooling. Singer has prepared both track-focused and road-focused aero configurations. The former comes with a high-downforce “Moby Dick” rear wing with an adjustable upper element and front fascia with a larger splitter, while the road-focused version has a rear ducktail spoiler and front fascia for reduced drag.

The fun part of the project is that owners can opt to modify their car to accept both configurations, as the front fascia and rear decklid assembly can be removed and changed whenever the mood strikes.
