STORY: The Levitating Timepiece

Looking back at the history of science, a huge effort was made fighting against gravity. Levitation, in the beginning, was reserved for professional use, but nowadays it is trending in household design. Swedish design studio Flyte is clearly a big fan of it. They previously created a zero-gravity planting system as well as a levitating lightbulb that was named as one of the “Best 25 Inventions of 2016” by Time magazine. Their latest idea is STORY, a levitating timepiece that expresses the concept of passing time with a wooden base and a metal sphere.

Making use of magnetic levitation, the magnetic sphere hovers above the wooden base and moves along its edge. In Clock mode, the sphere indicates the hour in standard 12-hour clock position. In Timer mode, the LED matrix display illuminates for the countdown. The interesting Journey mode allows the user to set the target date and start the countdown, waiting for a special moment in life to unfold. STORY is a product of technology and practicality with a sentimental twist. The project is pledging on Kickstarter and mass production is targeted for July.
