When the Ford Escort debuted in Europe in the late 1960s, it quickly became a motorsports legend. Its legacy endured until production of the final limited-edition, high-performance Mk1 RS2000 ended in 1974. Now, 50 years later, British automaker Boreham Motorworks is set to revive this icon.
Officially licensed by Ford, Boreham’s Ford Escort Mk1 RS is described as a “continumod” rather than a restomod. Instead of relying on a donor car, each vehicle is built from scratch with period-accurate details. These models receive authentic continuation status along with Ford-approved chassis numbers.
The exterior has been subtly refined to create a sleeker silhouette. Quarter bumpers and main indicators have been removed, while a billet-machined aluminium grille displays modern craftsmanship. The headlights evoke classic racing aesthetics, and the taillights combine iconic shapes with advanced technology. Every element, from the updated door handles and mirrors to the compact wheels, balances elegance with performance while preserving the original Mk1’s spirit. The vehicle’s target weight is just 800 kg.
Two engine options are available for this special continumod. The first is a reimagined 1.8-litre Twin Cam engine, producing 182 hp and paired with a four-speed straight-cut gearbox, blending Mk1 RS heritage with modern drivability. The second is a motorsport-inspired 2.1-litre engine delivering 295 hp, revving to an astonishing 10,000 RPM while weighing under 85 kg. This powerhouse features forged steel conrods, a billet crankshaft, a titanium exhaust, and electronic throttle control, mated to a five-speed dogleg gearbox for precise shifting. Both options are rear-wheel drive and promise a thrilling, visceral driving experience.
Boreham Motorworks will produce just 150 examples of the Ford Escort Mk1 RS, with pricing starting at £295,000. Production is set to begin in Q3 2025.
