Renault continues to explore the playful side of its electric future with the unveiling of the Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept. Following last year’s Savane 4×4 Concept, this latest interpretation of the reborn Renault 4 transforms the compact EV into a beach-ready leisure machine with a distinctly carefree attitude.
Drawing inspiration from the open-air Plein Air of 1969 and the quirky JP4 conversions of the early 1980s, the JP4x4 Concept reimagines the Renault 4 as a chic electric beach buggy. Finished in a pearlescent Emerald Green with a vivid orange interior, its bright, optimistic colours feel playful, combined with details such as openwork doors, an exposed roof structure and a drop-down tailgate reminiscent of a compact pick-up. Instead of a soft top, Renault has intentionally blurred the line between interior and exterior, creating what Advanced Design Director Jean-Philippe Salar describes as a car with “no real boundary”. A surfboard strapped to the roof and skateboards in the rear further reinforce its leisure-focused personality.
Despite the relaxed styling, the JP4x4 Concept gains genuine off-road capability. A second electric motor mounted on the rear axle enables permanent four-wheel drive, allowing the concept to tackle sandy beaches and rougher terrain with greater confidence. Ride height is increased by 15mm over the standard Renault 4 E-Tech electric, while widened tracks, bespoke JP4 wheels and Goodyear UltraGrip tyres complete the tougher stance.
Renault mixes retro references with modern materials for the interior. The bucket seats echo the “Egyptian mummy” designs used by Renault during the 1970s, while textile-covered surfaces and a floating centre console add warmth to the cabin. As special as it is, the Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept remains a one-off, with no production plans currently announced.
