Modern Day Gulliver
The miniature art of Tatsuya Tanaka

Art should not be exclusive and everything in daily life can spark off creativity. Japanese art director and photographer Tatsuya Tanaka makes use of things that we see every day, like food, stationary and household items, and pairs them with diorama-style figures to create interesting scenes.

It all started when Tanaka wanted to translate fanciful thoughts, such as a broccoli forest of trees and leaves on water looking like boats, into photographs. He is also an avid collector of diorama-style figures, of which he has over 3,000. He has been updating his website Miniature Calendar daily with a miniature photograph since April 2011, a routine that is not easy to keep up. His imagination is key to his success, for which the same item can be a keyboard or a formula race car. His unique style has made him a popular collaborator with various brands including Toyota and ANA. If you happen to be visiting in Kaohsiung, you may want to check out his exhibition at the Pier-2 Art Centre, running until 4 March.
