Smart Vision EQ Fortwo

Mercedes-Benz will release more than ten new electric production models ranging from the compact Smart car to a large SUV by 2022. In the coming Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September, Smart is going to showcase the Smart Vision EQ Fortwo, an autonomous, electric concept that offers individualised and efficient local public transport.

The appearance of the concept clearly follows the footstep of the original Smart Fortwo, but it offers far more innovation. In place of the grille there is a Black Panel for displaying the current status of the car or message to other road users such us inviting pedestrians to cross the street. The headlights are replaced by LED displays that can show an eye-like shape for a more human-like communication. The doors can be used as display for projection too if the car is unoccupied.

Smart Vision EQ Fortwo is designed for sharing and to be requested via a mobile device. The car is fully autonomous and settings are inputted via the device, as a result there are no controls in the interior and the dashboard is replaced by a 24-inch display supported by two 4-inch displays. There is also a social element in the car sharing system even though there are only two seats on board. If a passenger would like to share his or her ride with another user, possible passengers are suggested based on their profiles, interests and current travel plans, and he or she can choose to accept or reject those suggestions.

Powered by two lithium-ion battery packs with a total capacity of 30 kWh, the Smart Vision EQ Fortwo will autonomously find a charging facility when not in use. There is also ample space for luggage on the floor and under the bench seat.
