Ferrari has expanded its Collectables project with Sketch Body, a series that turns the automotive design process into art for display. Rather than recreating an entire car, the project focuses on individual body panels, using them as three-dimensional canvases for the lines that helped shape the original vehicle.

According to Ferrari, Sketch Body is built around the meeting of two extremes in the creative process: intuition and execution. The first is represented by the rapid, instinctive sketch, where an idea takes form through the recognisable hand of Chief Design Officer Flavio Manzoni. The second comes through engineering precision, manufacturing expertise, and craftsmanship, which transform that initial gesture into a finished automotive form.

The project takes its inspiration from the Ferrari 812 Competizione Tailor Made, a one-off interpretation that explored the idea of the car as a blank sheet. That same thinking is carried into Sketch Body, where bonnets and rear decks are removed from their original function and presented as independent design objects.

Across each piece, the sketch returns to the surface it originally helped define. Its lines follow the panel’s curves and volumes, changing with the light and giving the impression that the initial drawing has been transferred directly onto the finished bodywork.

Sketch Body also fits into Ferrari’s wider Collectables philosophy, which draws on the work of the Ferrari Design Centre and its background in both design and architecture. For Manzoni, the emphasis is on subtraction rather than adding the superfluous, allowing the emotion and intent of the original project to remain clearly visible in the form of a piece of art.
