First Holographic On Cell
RED Hydrogen One

Known for building cutting-edge cameras for filmmaking, RED has announced the release of their very first smartphone – the Hydrogen One.

The new smartphone will be built on Android and features a 5.7-inch “hydrogen holographic display”, which is a significant breakthrough for both the company and the industry. It uses nanotechnology to seamlessly switch between 2D content, holographic content, 3D content and interactive games, all without the need for glasses.

The Hydrogen One features a modular camera unit allowing users to switch out with different camera modules for “higher-quality motion and still images.” It is also capable of filming 3D footage in RED’s proprietary holographic video format called Hydrogen. However, those modules won’t be ready at launch.

Audio wise, the smartphone will record audio in a proprietary audio format for “multidimensional” audio to match with the holographic content, which will be similar to a 5.1 sound system, according to the company.

Additionally, Hydrogen One allows owners of RED Scarlet, Epic, or Weapon models to control those cameras as well.

The Hydrogen One is offered in aluminium or titanium, starting at $1,195 and $1,595 respectively. Pre-orders are now being accepted through the brand’s website with an estimated delivery in early 2018.
