The Decision

Fernando Alonso was asked to comment on his future with McLaren. He explained how the performance of the current F1 cars make him feel “a little bit sad” when compared to the frightening machines he drove earlier in his career. “The [current era] cars are heavy, no grip, we save fuel, we save tyres, we save everything from lap one, so it’s a bit against the instinct of the driver and next year is a big question mark. I think, with the new regulations, everything will change a little bit”.

He stated he would consider his position after driving McLaren’s 2017 car. If the car lived up to its more challenging and faster billing by F1’s new aerodynamic rules and the wider tyres provided by Pirelli, he would stay in the sport longer. What a shame Formula 1 fans have such outstanding champions, who are capable of mesmerising performances and heroics, hobbled by “progressive” rules. Someday the sport will regret the wasting of such incredible potential for the need to “lift and coast” for power regeneration.

Pity.

Now, its on to Monza this weekend.
