Thinnest Mechanical Watch On Earth
Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept

The Piaget Altiplano 900P once claimed the title of “world’s thinnest mechanical watch” in 2013 with a thickness of 3.65 mm, but was later beaten by just 0.05 mm in 2015 by the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Squelette. Now Piaget has regained the title with their its Altiplano Ultimate Concept watch, which is unbelievably thin at just 2 mm.

2 mm is thinner than some of the coins we carry everyday, 2 mm is also the thickness of the historic Piaget Calibre 9P developed in 1957, It’s not confirmed whether the watchmaker purposefully achieved 2 mm because Calibre 9P, but the result is made possible by using the base plate of the movement as the case back and taking out conventional components such as the balance cock, regulating index, shock absorbing system, jewels and balance staff. The balance spring is placed below the balance and some of the wheels only have a height of 0.12 mm and the crystal is only 0.2 mm thick. The case is produced in high tech cobalt-based alloy, while the alligator-skin strap is ultra-thin too at 1.1 mm.

While it has the word “Concept” in its name, the timepiece will not just remain as a concept watch and will be in production. The naming is a bit confusing, but a watch with this level of craftsmanship should definitely be made available to connoisseurs.
