Favre-Leuba Raider Harpoon

Many watches with only one hand have been created by watchmakers pursuing the simplest design or mechanical novelty. Favre-Leuba, on the other hand, seems to be the only one that does it for practicality.

For professional divers, the most important reading on the watch is the one that indicates how many minutes they can still stay in the water. This explains the reason why only one hand is kept on the dial of the Raider Harpoon, and why the minutes hand is designed with a bold orange irregular hexagon. The bezel is equally important too for time tracking and the 20-minute scale in orange on the rotating bezel also works as a good reminder.

The bezel is deliberately unidirectional for preventing reverse rotation and thus affects the timing. The function of the seconds indicator is for letting the wearer know that the watch is functioning all the time, hence it is designed as a centre disc. The ring co-rotates following the minutes hand and the numbers on the ring return to their starting point after twelve hours. Therefore, to find out the exact time, the wearer just needs to observe the only hand on the watch as it also points to the appropriate hour on the ring. For example, the time indicated in the photo is 3:40.

As a diving watch, the Raider Harpoon certainly meets the demands of professional divers. The case is water-resistant up to 500 m. It also features the helium valve at 2 o’clock, providing the necessary pressure balance inside the watch that protects the movement after spending some time under the water.
