Motorsport Materials Meet Precision Optics
Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition

A new limited-edition compact camera has been launched to mark the start of an official licensing partnership between prestigious German optics manufacturer Leica and Formula 1. The Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition translates motorsport materials and design cues into a high-end photographic tool, blending precision engineering with the tactile language of the racetrack.

For the first time, carbon fibre, ubiquitous in Formula 1 chassis construction, appears on a Leica camera. The wireless charging handgrip receives a full carbon-fibre shell, matched by a hot-shoe-mounted thumb rest and a soft-release button featuring a carbon inlay ringed in signature red. These components are manufactured and finished in Germany, with the weave positioned precisely where the photographer’s hands rest. The body itself is wrapped in black, non-slip Microvelour, textured to evoke the grip of a modern racing steering wheel and further reinforce the connection to the cockpit.

Colour coding drawn from Formula 1 practice appears on the soft-release button and one function button on the thumb rest, both finished in high-visibility red so they can be located by touch without diverting attention from the subject. Official branding is engraved on the top plate and lens cap, while a co-branded rope strap completes the package. The camera retains the core technical excellence of the standard Q3 43: a 60-megapixel full-frame sensor with Triple Resolution Technology (60/36/18 MP), 8K video capability and a sharp APO-Summicron 43 mm f/2 ASPH. lens that approximates the natural field of view of the human eye.

An exclusive ‘Formula 1’ Leica Look is supplied via the FOTOS app. This punchier, higher-contrast and more saturated colour profile can be loaded onto the camera and previewed live in the electronic viewfinder, allowing images to capture the intensity of the paddock and trackside atmosphere with minimal post-processing.

Priced at $9,950, the special edition is available now through official stores, the online shop, and specialist retailers. It was introduced at an event in Los Angeles hosted by Formula 1 presenter Ariana Bravo and 2009 world champion Jenson Button. The collaboration signals a new chapter in which the shared values of precision, performance and craftsmanship in photography and motorsport find tangible expression in a single, highly tactile instrument.
