Photographer Kishin Shinoyama dies at 83

Renowned Japanese photographer Kishin Shinoyama passed away on January 4, 2024, at the age of 83.

Born in Tokyo in 1940, Shinoyama studied photography at Nihon University College of Art and began his career as a freelance photographer in 1968. In addition to his artistic work encompassing fashion, landscape, and architecture, he gained notable acclaim for his portraits of celebrities.

Internationally, Shinoyama’s most recognized work is his photoshoot of John Lennon and Yoko Ono for their 1980 album “Double Fantasy.” Another noteworthy example is the photograph of Yukio Mishima, taken shortly before the author’s tragic demise. For enthusiasts of Japanese pop culture, Shinoyama is well-known as the photographer behind nude photoshoots featuring popular actresses, including Rie Miyazawa’s 1991 photo album, “Santa Fe.”

Shinoyama also served as the photographer for the best-selling Japanese automotive magazine, Navi, known for its unique and stylish approach to photography. Furthermore, a dedicated book titled “Car Girl” showcased a similar style, highlighting Shinoyama’s artistic contributions. His legacy will undoubtedly endure through the timeless images he captured.
