This past weekend, one of Japan’s largest automotive events took centre stage — the Tokyo Auto Salon. Renowned as a premier platform for automakers and aftermarket parts manufacturers to showcase their latest modified and tuned models, the 2025 edition did not disappoint. Here are some of our favourite highlights from this year’s show.
Toyota GR Yaris by Tom’s
Toyota certainly has a vision for maximising the potential of the GR Yaris, but Tom’s Racing brings its own take, infusing the model with a bold racing spirit through meticulous customisation. The striking green hood line, inspired by Super Formula, along with styling elements like the front diffuser and rear roof wing, embodies TOM’S racing DNA. However, this special edition is designed to excel both on the track and in urban environments.
While the metallic green exterior wrap and interior design are exclusive to the concept display, the styling and mechanical upgrades are available for general car owners to purchase as individual parts.
Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster
Mazda showcased two versions of its Spirit Racing Roadsters at this year’s salon, including the exclusive Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R, limited to just 200 units. The highlight of this soft-top special edition is its 2.0-litre DOHC 4-cylinder engine, an upgraded version of the SKYACTIV-G 2.0. With unique camshafts, cylinder heads, pistons, and exhaust manifolds, the engine delivers 197 hp, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The exterior has been fine-tuned for enhanced aerodynamics, leveraging insights from the Super Endurance Race and wind tunnel testing. Key features include carbon-fibre splitters at the front and sides, along with a low-mount spoiler on the trunk. Inside, Alcantara dominates the cabin, accented with red double stitching and sporty bucket seats that amplify the dynamic atmosphere. Pricing is expected to be around 7 million Japanese yen.
Nissan R32 GT-R EV Conversion
The Nissan GT-R hardly needs an introduction to car enthusiasts. A team of volunteer engineers from Nissan has transformed this 1989 R32 Skyline GT-R (BNR32) into an electric vehicle, with work on this concept car beginning in March 2023.
This EV is powered by two electric motors, delivering a combined output of 430 hp and 680 Nm of torque, sourced from the Leaf NISMO RC02’s system. While larger 18-inch wheels have been fitted, they retain the aesthetic of the original stock wheels.
Additional custom features include a NISMO sports suspension kit co-developed with Öhlins, a bespoke R32-style shift knob and paddle shifters, digital instrument and centre control panels, and bespoke racing seats, offering a thoroughly modernised update to this iconic vehicle.
Subaru BRZ STI Sport Purple Edition
This striking Subaru BRZ STI Sport Edition, finished in a rich Galaxy Purple Pearl, is limited to just 200 units. The vibrant exterior is complemented by unique 18-inch wheels with a high-luster silver coating.
Under the hood, the performance remains unchanged, featuring a 2.4-litre DOHC engine paired with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Inside, the cabin is adorned with silver and grey accents, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and handbrake lever, adding a touch of sophistication to its sporty character.
Honda Prelude Prototype
At the Japan Mobility Show in October 2023, Honda unveiled a customised version of the Prelude Concept. Now, the brand is set to showcase the Prelude Prototype, equipped with the next-generation e:HEV hybrid system, scheduled for launch in autumn 2025.
The design makes a bold return with aerodynamic enhancements, including a rear spoiler and front and rear splitters, all accentuating the sleek black body. The prototype on display also featured blacked-out windows, keeping the interior details under wraps for now. While specifics regarding model grades and pricing remain unknown, it’s exciting to see this legendary nameplate heading toward production in the near future.
