For gamers of a certain generation, few driving games are remembered as fondly as Crazy Taxi. First released by Sega in arcades in 1999 before arriving on the Dreamcast the following year, the game became an instant cult classic thanks to its simple yet addictive formula. Nearly three decades after the series first arrived, Sega is finally bringing it back in 2027.
Rather than simply recreating the original arcade or Dreamcast experience, the new Crazy Taxi expands the formula into a globe-trotting adventure. Protagonist Axel returns to pursue a group of mysterious masked thieves who have stolen his beloved taxi, and the story-driven World Tour campaign will take players across five distinct cities, each featuring unique terrain, driving challenges and missions. Along the way, players will encounter eccentric characters, complete odd jobs and earn cash to unlock new vehicles and customisation options.
While the scale has grown considerably, Sega insists the essence of Crazy Taxi remains intact. Players will still perform outrageous drifts, launch over jumps, and weave through traffic at breakneck speed while chasing fares and completing objectives. For those seeking a dose of nostalgia, Arcade Mode will revive the familiar race-against-the-clock format that made the original such a hit. The multiplayer component has also expanded, allowing players to compete against friends and online rivals across a variety of game modes and platforms.
Crazy Taxi: World Tour is scheduled for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
