Night Shift Bikes' "Leafy Savage"

Leafy Savage is the latest creation from Matt Candler, owner of Night Shift Bikes. Stunning in both appearance and speed, it’s also amazingly eco-friendly. The custom bike begun as a 2003 Suzuki Savage rolling chassis with the original motor swapped for a black electric motor built by Elertrac, that generates 13 hp continuously and up to a maximum of 40 hp. Being an electric motor, the setup requires no transmission, and the electrical flow between the motor and battery is handled by a silver 250 amp Kelly controller under the right side of the swing arm.

The bike’s battery pack, taken from the all-electric Nissan Leaf, is wired in series to produce a total of 116 volts. The Eltek charger situated in the original gas tank provides up to 3,000 watts at 220 volts. Currently, the bike has a range of nearly 100 miles after a close to three-hour charge but is adjustable by varying the balance between acceleration and range. By lifting off the throttle, the motor switches polarity and recharges the battery through regenerative braking. The bike is also beefed up with upgraded shocks, LED lighting, a kickstand mod and a rear disc brake. Perhaps the most fantastic element of the Leafy Savage is Matt Candler, himself. A self-taught engineer, Candler wants to make unique electric bikes that are fun to ride. One can hardly imagine the intriguing Leafy Savage is built by an amateur.
