Brutalist Legos
Arndt Schlaudraff’s temporary temples

Originated nearly six decades ago, Brutalist architecture became one of the most popular architectural styles of the last century.  This architectural style, as personified by noted designer Le Corbusier, features undisguised concrete material, bold exterior forms, and beautiful silhouettes.

Recently, Germany artist Arndt Schlaudraff, released a series of Lego-built Brutalist architectural forms through his Instagram feed, revealing works that feature an astonishing level of detail. Interviewed by deezen, last month, Schlaudraff  revealed that his initial plan was to only build his own house using Legos as a leisure activity. However, once he saw images of Brutalist architecture on Facebook, he decided to recreate them with Legos. So far, he has replicated dozens of Brutalist works, including works by Le Corbusier, Zaha Hadid and Jürgen Mayer H.

Schlaudraff’s Instagram feed has grown to nearly 5000 followers, and he is frequently asked how one can purchase his replications. His response, however, has been quite amusing; apparently, he does not have enough bricks. Each time he decides to build something new, he must disassemble his old works, thus, all of his creations now exist only as photos.  “I like the idea that my buildings existed in the past,” said Schlaudraff, but now the only proof that they existed are the photos that I took. Maybe there’s an archaeological thought behind that.”
