A Great Variety Of Rare Cars
Bonhams The Quail Auction

Monterey Peninsula in California becomes the mecca of automotive enthusiasts each August during the  Monterey Car Week as some of the latest supercars make their debut there, while classic car lovers can revel in some of the rarest and most beautiful vehicles ever built on display. One of the staple events during the Monterey Car Week is Bonhams’ Quail auction, and this year the auction house has once again curated an incredible sale that includes rare gems of different themes and eras.

A few rare Ferraris have caught our attention among the 109 lots in this auction. There’s the 2003 Ferrari Enzo, a modern collectable hypercar that celebrates the marque’s Formula 1 records and is named after founder Enzo Ferrari. This particular example is restored in the original Rosso Corsa DS 322 body paint and has been certified by Ferrari Classiche.

A more classic choice could be the 1967 Ferrari 412P Berlinetta. This exact sports prototype was driven in 1967 to third place at the 1000kms of Spa and was the winner of the 1968 Nuremberg 200km. With a matching-numbers 3,989 cc DOHC 24-valve V12 engine, it has been fully restored and is registered as a road-going car. Another historic prancing horse is the 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta, featuring beautiful original Superleggera coachwork by Touring, the car was one of only two examples ever built and has raced in 24 Hours of Le Mans, coming in seventh in its class.

That isn’t the only ex-Le Mans race car to head to the auction block at Monterey, either, with a 1957 AC Ace Bristol Le Mans Roadster that served as a factory entry and finished second in class and 10th overall in the 1957 running of the race. The more recent 1999 Panoz LMP-1 Roadster S Le Mans veteran has it’s own interesting and unique layout, with the engine being placed in front, and the Xtrac sequential 6-speed gearbox right next to the driver and just ahead of the rear wheels.

For collectors who are interested in vehicles with over a century of history, the 1914 Simplex 50hp Tourer and the 1916 Stutz Model 4C Bearcat are worth paying attention to, while those who love a bit of connection to Hollywood can take a look at the 1951 Allard J2X once owned by Steve McQueen, as well as the 1965 Apollo GT used in the 1968 movie The Love Bug.

The Bonhams Quail Auction will take place at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club on Friday, 18 August at 11:00 am local time. Details of the sale can be found here.
