Retro Style Blended with Modern Technology
The "Hook Bicycle"

Penny-farthing, also known as the high wheeler and ordinary, is a term used specifically to describe the 19th century antique bike which has a large front wheel and a small rear wheel. It is also one of the oldest bicycle design in history. When the Penny-farthing was first invented, it quickly became the mobile for means of delivery used by European gentlemen. It also became a luxury and a term synonymous with fashion. However, Penny-farthing also has a fatal weakness, which was the height of the seat and the danger it caused to drivers. Ever since the Safety Bicycle model got released into the market, Penny-farthing was immediately replaced and disappeared off the streets of Europe as if it has never existed before.

I.R is a Hong Kong based furniture and home goods design company who is inspired by the 19th century industrial revolution. They have recently released their “Hook Bicycle” project, in which a series of retro cars are included, with the Penny-farthing model being one of them. Other models include racing and single-speed vehicles, as well as vintage bicycle accessories. The Penny-farthing we see here is one of the highlights within their “Hook Bicycle” project. Its front wheel has been made a bit smaller in comparison to the original design and the seat has been lowered for the consideration of safety and road conditions in the current era. According to designer Joseph, they want people to enjoy riding on this Penny-farthing in our current time.

Apart from the alterations previously mentioned, there are also improvisations made to the choice of the material used. The traditional Penny-farthing uses steel for its frame, but the new model uses alloy which offers a lighter weight and makes it rust proof. Still retaining the antique appearance from the 19th century, the reinterpreted version provides the driver with convenience and safety, making it a product that well blends a fine retro style with our modern day technology.
