Visible Vibrations
Sennheiser X KYMAT

During Art Basel‘s fifth edition in Hong Kong last week, sound proved to be capable of creating extraordinarily beautiful visual images equal to the surrounding paintings, crafts and installations.

Sennheiser, the German professional sound solutions company, invited fellow countryman and sound artist KYMAT to participate in their Future Audio Artist Program, using their professional sound equipment for his projects in the field of sound art. KYMAT used a variety of Sennheiser’s different microphones including the MKH 8020, MKH 8040, MK 8 and MD 441 to collect different kinds of sound. They were then passed through a mixer, causing the sound waves to become vibrations visible on the surface of water. Different frequencies created different water images, making sound visible to our eyes.

In the video, you’ll hear a cat purr, and the sounds generated by a cello and a ship horn, and see their water images respectively. You’ll be surprised by the visuals, and how beautiful and ever-changing everyday sound can be.
