Virtual reality on social media
Facebook Surround 360

In recent years, Facebook has been striving for better video player services. Apart from encouraging users to upload videos, they have also added the live broadcast option to their platform. At the recent annual F8 developer conference, they even pushed for the development of virtual reality videos. In particular, they highlighted on their Surround 360-degree panoramic camera.  Covering realms such as navigation, time, and weather information, just to name a few, they believe that with this eyeglass device, such virtual reality videos can be achieved in the near future. With a flying saucer-like appearance, the device has a total of 17 lenses, and can record 360-degree panoramic VR movies with up to 8K-resolution. Apart from the core 14 wide-angle lenses which surround the side, there are also 3 fisheye lenses located on the top and the bottom which allows the resulting video to not capture the camera stand, unlike other regular panoramic cameras. The factory also took into account the unnaturally skewed video distortion produced by traditional rolling shutter by deliberately replacing it with a global shutter.

As the demonstration at the conference revealed, the playback appears to be very smooth, with no tabbing or stopping. They strongly emphasize that their camera will not overheat or suffer from other similar problems, even if it is used for several hours. Last, but not least, the production cost of this equipment is around USD $30,000. However, Facebook is not planning to sell this to the public; they will instead develop related software and design details so that different developers can design their own 3D photographic products based on their own actual needs. This approach is aimed at promoting the concept so that more manufacturers will actively participate in the future development of virtual reality.
