1994 Ferrari 333 SP to be Auctioned in September

RM Sotheby’s will be holding a single-marque sale in partnership with Ferrari this coming September, in order to commemorate the legendary manufacturer’s 70th anniversary. The FERRARI – LEGGENDA E PASSIONE, is set to be a world-class event as it hosts the world’s most discerning collectors and an exclusive, curated selection of the greatest sports, GT, and racing Ferraris ever built, including this 1994 Ferrari 333 SP.

Designed specifically for the IMSA World Sports Car series in North America, the 1994 Ferrari 333 SP was a joint project between Ferrari, its long-term racing partner Michelotto and racing constructor Dallara. The car employed a flat-bottomed carbon fibre monocoque chassis and drew heavily on Dallara’s F1 experience. Its engine was the magnificent 4.0-litre V-12 F310E, which was a long stroke version of the 1990 Type 036 Formula One unit. During its inaugural 1994 season, the 333 immediately proved its worth with five victories over seven IMSA rounds, including a hat-trick for Moretti and his Momo team at midseason. By the end of its final official race in 2002, the 333 SP had participated in 144 races, accumulated 49 wins and taking 12 major championships in the process.

There were only 40 examples of the 333 ever produced, and this particular 333 is the sixth one made, though it never raced. Accompanied by Ferrari Classiche certification, the 333 retains its original engine and gearbox, entirely rebuilt by Michelotto in 2016, with less than one hour on the engine.

The auction commences September 9 at Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello, Italy.
