Luc Besson’s upcoming sci-fi epic “Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets” starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne and Clive Owen will hit theatres on July 21st. While many sci-fi fans are curious to see how Besson adapts the French science fiction comic series Valérian and Laureline into a feature film format, we feel more excited about the SKYJET, a single-seat spaceship designed by Lexus that’s featured in the movie.

According to the Valérian creative team, the design of the SKYJET took inspiration from Lexus’ future visions of AI and advanced HMI technologies where vehicles become one with the driver, enabling control of the vehicle with simple hand gestures, such as with the LF-FC concept’s hologram technology, or even the human mind.

Additionally, the final design of the SKYJET incorporates an adapted interpretation of Lexus’ signature “spindle” grille, as well as a similar athletic and aerodynamic headlight design seen on the 2017 Lexus LC Coupe. Likewise, the jet also incorporates Lexus’ work on innovative hydrogen fuel cell technology for a future energy capsule.

Lexus recently unveiled a behind-the-scenes SKYJET video showcasing the construction of the single-seat spacecraft. Further, they have a website that takes you through SKYJET’s creative journey from Luc Besson’s original concept to its visualisation by Concept Designer Ben Mauro with assistance from Lexus, that matches Besson’s foresight of a vehicle befitting the Valérian world, set 700 years in the future.
