DualSense – the Controller for PlayStation 5

It’s crucial for any decent brand to retain the attention and excitement of its target audience. Despite very long product cycles, that’s something that Sony has always done well, and with the imminent release of the Playstation 5, the Japanese manufacturer has given its fans plenty to be hyped about recently. Now, after a few rounds of technical and hardware announcements for the new console, Sony has shifted its focus to the new PS5 controller, the DualSense.

According to Sony, the new controller is not only for “playing”, but also for “feeling” a game.  Sony’s main vision when developing the Dual Sense was to captivate more of a player’s senses when interacting with the virtual worlds in PS5 games, providing a new level of immersion to players.  As the current-gen DualShock 4 has been a great success, Sony decided to keep many of its best features while adding new functionality.  Haptic feedback has also been adopted to bring powerful sensations to players, like the grittiness of driving a car through mud, for example. Adaptive triggers have been incorporated into the L2 and R2 buttons, which allow players to feel actions more realistically, like the increasing tension when drawing a bow to loose an arrow. A built-in microphone array has also been added to the new controller, enabling players to chat with friends more easily.

Though the “Share” button will no longer exist, according to Sony, a “Create” button serves as its replacement. Sony has so far only said that this new button offers “pioneering functions” but has not divulged any further details as of yet — we’re looking forward to seeing what the company can come up with.
