Unusual Speed Chaser
1975 George Barris Snakepit

It’s not an everyday chance to come across a Barris Kustom being available for sale. George Barris was the legendary creator of the original 1966 Batmobile, together with his team they were responsible for most of the famous TV and movie cars in 1960s and 1970s. H&H Classics is selling the 1975 George Barris SnakePit at no reserve on 2 February in its classic car online auction. For reference, the SnakePit was last seen in the market earlier this year at US$750,000.

The SnakePit took almost four years and US$100,000 to build, which is around US$1,265,000 now with inflation factored in. Under the all-steel body are six Cobra-Ford 351 V-8 engines, 12 Holley carburetors, two automatic transmissions and two fuel tanks. It was designed to develop 2,000 hp and reach a top speed of 300 mph. While it was promoted as potential land speed record breaker, it seems there’s no evidence of an actually attempt. It doesn’t really matter though, as its interesting body shape, plus the 48 exhaust pipes and orange velvet interior are more then enough to grab all the attention. Barris Kustom’s production is not for everyone, but for those who are into the style, there’s hardly any other alternative.
