Geneva Motor Show preview

The Geneva Motor Show is taking place on 6 to 18 March with the first two days set aside as a press preview. By now most automakers have announced the models to be launched at the show, yet the finer details may only be disclosed on the 6th. We have introduced a selected few in last few weeks, including the Pininfarina Electric HK GT Concept, Rimac Concept Two, Zenvo’s hypercar and of course the McLaren Senna, and there are a few more powerful machines that are worth looking forward to.

Mercedes-AMG GT

Let’s begin with something we are more certain of. The Mercedes-AMG four door GT is based on the concept revealed in Geneva last year. Some official spy shots have been released, showing the camouflaged test car on the track and inside the wind tunnel. It has a similar silhouette to the concept car, featuring a long hood and sleek lines. Like other GT models from Mercedes-AMG, the four door version is also equipped with a 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, but it is also supported by an electric motor for more power.

Toyota Supra

It’s been 14 years since Toyota last launched the Supra. Toyota’s official announcement of the new version’s presence in Geneva is just an ambiguous teaser image with the line “a modern racing concept signals Toyota’s commitment to bring back to the market its most iconic sports car.” It doesn’t even include the name Supra, but rumours has it that the new model will be available in a production version under Toyota’s mark and racing version under the Toyota Gazoo Racing brand, while appearance-wise it shares similarities to the FT-1 concept unveiled in 2014. The project is said to be co-developed with BMW alongside the new Z4 and will feature BMW-sourced engines. Japanese magazine Best Car has published some figures meant to be the specifications of the new Supra, including 335 hp and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.8 seconds.

Italdesign Zerouno Roadster

Celebrating its 50 anniversary this year, Italdesign will debut the Zerouno Roadster next month. The Zerouno Coupé, limited to 5 examples, was released exactly one year ago at the same show. The roofless version is expected to feature the same chassis as the coupé as well as its 5.2-litre V10 engine shared with the Audi R8. The coupé accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds before reaching to top speed of 323 km/h, and the roadster should perform in a similar fashion. It is said to be a limited edition with all 5 examples being spoken for.

Subaru Viziv Tourer Concept

Japanese manufacturer Subaru will showcase its latest concept, the Viziv Tourer. The Viziv name may sound familiar, as it is a series of hybrid concepts, the first of which was launched at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The Viziv name is derived from the phrase “Vision for Innovation” and to date we’ve seen the original Viziv, Viziv Evolution, Viziv 2, Viziv Future Concept, Viziv-7 and the Viziv Performance Concept. In the teaser image, only the taillights and trunk lid are visible so we will have to wait two more weeks for more details.

David Brown Speedback Silverstone Edition

British automaker David Brown will be showing a limited edition inspired by 1950s and 1960s racing GT cars. With just 10 examples, the Speedback Silverstone Edition is derived from the Speedback GT model and named after the location of the 18,000 sq ft headquarters where the new car will be hand built. Taking over 8,000 hours to handcraft, the Speedback Silverstone Edition is expected to boast over 600 hp.

Morgan Aero GT

British sports car maker Morgan has more recently been associated with its three wheelers, but the lightweight Aero 8, first launched in 2000, is also attention worthy. The company is bidding farewell to the model with the limited edition Aero GT. Limited to 8 examples, the GT variant features the same 367 bhp 4.8-litre BMW V8 that achieves 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 273 km/h as the original Aero 8, but is fitted with new hand-worked body panels including wing top louvres and new rear difuser inspired by Morgan race cars. This is going to be the last chance to grab not just the Aero 8 powertrain, but also the naturally aspirated BMW V8 engine.
