Ukiyo-e in Motion
"The Great Wave” by Garage Italia Customs

The Great Wave by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai is possibly one of the most well-recognised woodblock printing art pieces. First published in the early 19th Century, the ukiyo-e artwork features three boats in the fury sea with Mount Fuji in the background.

The creative team at Garage Italia Customs has airbrushed the masterpiece on an Alfa Romeo 4C coupe. The connection between The Great Wave and the Alfa model is not clear, but the result is indeed impressive. The interior is also altered to complement the colour scheme of the exterior: it features Kurabo washed denim in light blue and Foglizzo leather in cream. The steering wheel is adorned with details usually decorating the handle of Japanese swords, and white contrast stitching and accents can be found on the instrument panel and air vents.

This particular one-off will be displayed among other previous works exclusively for the Piston Head II: Artists Engage The Automobile exhibition, taking place at the Venus Gallery of Los Angeles from July 30th to September 30th.
