The world’s first 3D-printed motorcycle
AP Works Light Rider

While 3D-printing is no longer reserved for techies and appears in our daily lives more frequently in the form of novelty items or small gadgets, it is still rare to own something developed from this technology that is large. APWorks, a 100% subsidiary of Airbus Group, has just announced the launch of Light Rider, a first of its kind electric motorcycle with a 3D-printed frame.

The highlight of the Light Rider, of course, is its base material. Developed by AP Works, Scalmalloy, is a corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy that is as strong as titanium while extremely lightweight. The frame itself weighs a mere 6 kg; the whole bike is 35 kg. Powered by a 6 kW electric motor and a replaceable battery with a 60km range, it accelerates from 0-45 km/h in 3 seconds with a top speed at 80 km/h. These figures are not particularly impressive, but the significance of Light Rider is game changing. The motorcycle can be pre-ordered at the price of 50,000 Euros and is limited to 50 units.
