The World’s Finest
1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer ‘Boat Tail’

Not many cars can be described as the world’s finest, but this 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer ‘Boat Tail’ fulfils the criteria, even if its style is not your cup of tea. After all, it won the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance ‘Best in Show’ award last year, and this elegant vehicle will join Concours of Elegance 2018 at Hampton Court Palace in London, which is its very first time in the UK in 60 years.

The vehicle was based on the 1927 Mercedes S-Type, the unique ‘Boat Tail’ was created for British Racing Drivers’ Club co-founder Francis Curzon, the 5th Earl of Howe. Coachbuilder Barker of London was selected to fit the car with a unique body that incorporated a lightweight and aerodynamic shell and aircraft-inspired aluminium side pods. It was one of the most powerful road-going, race-capable cars of the time.

Over the years with changes on ownership many fine details, including the special ‘boat tail’ were lost. It was only recently that these elements as well as Earl Howe’s specific Peacock Blue body paint were restored to original based on newly-found photographs.

The Concours of Elegance will take place on 31 August to 2 September, showcasing around 60 other extremely rare or unique vehicles in the Main Concours event.
