The record-breaking oddity
Renault Nervasport des Records

The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place this weekend in Chichester, West Sussex in the UK. Famous F1 teams are attending and driving up iconic Goodwood Hill, while supercars and racers old and new are also taking on the challenge and then displayed off track. The festival is a rare occasion that let us take a glimpse at some of the quirkiest cars in automotive history.

Take this 1934 Renault Nervasport des Records, for example. The extremely streamlined body was designed by an engineer specialising in the aerodynamics of racing airplanes. The body is supported by a wooden frame on a generic chassis. The engine used is an inline 8-cylinder, as was the standard feature back then, and particularly tuned to be a record-breaker. Its most legendary performance was on the Montlhery circuit in April 1934. It completed 8,037 km in 48 hours with an average speed of 167.445 km/h. It succeeded in fulfilling its purpose and indeed broke three world records.
