The Plot Thickens
Mercedes-AMG 50th anniversary Hypercar
Reports continue to accumulate that Mercedes-AMG’s commemoration of its semicentennial will be the launch of a hypercar powered by their F1 engine. The latest edition is a recent article in Evo quoting from a source at the Belgian Grand Prix that stated that the Mercedes expects to release only 50 units with the price in the region of 4 million euros. The hypercar market has remained an unexploited segment for the German automaker, and the recent Aston Martin Red Bull 001 hyper creation suggests it was the key inspiration for the Mercedes F1-engined road car.
The commemorative AMG “bahn-burner” is now said to use a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engine resembling the unit in their W07 F1 racer, with the possibility of increasing to 2.0-litre. Combining this engine with an F1-style energy-recovery system could push total output to between 1,000 hp to 1,500 hp. As is standard on today’s hypercars, it is said the Mercedes-AMG will have a carbon fibre monocoque and feature a gullwing-style cockpit canopy, and both carbon fibre and aluminium will be used to make it as light as possible, with a target weight of 1,000-1,300 kg. As Mercedes-AMG hasn’t offered a response to any of these rumours, you can expect speculation to accelerate as we near the end of the year.
