The New Superheroes
New Banksy artwork pays tribute to the NHS

In these unprecedented times, most people are busy staying safe and keeping our social distance, but medical workers of all sorts are unselfishly risking their own lives to save others. The general public has shown its gratitude through giving rounds of applause, while street artist Banksy has created a piece of artwork paying tribute to the UK’s NHS workers.

Titled Painting for Saints, we see the young boy in the drawing is holding a nurse toy, while traditional superhero figures Batman and Spider-Man are put aside in the wastebasket. The nurse is wearing a face mask and white apron with a cross, she also has a cape, and has her arm raised as if she is flying like a superhero.

Banksy took to his Instagram account to showcase this piece and it’s now framed nicely in a corridor at Southampton general hospital. He has also written a note to show his appreciation to NHS workers: “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.” The artwork will be put on public display after the lockdown measures are relieved, and will later be auctioned for charity.
