The Most Authentic Sound
Vinyl Hero x Whatever. Coffee "Live Record" Pop-Up Store

Many music lovers consider vinyl to be the best format for delivering an authentic, true-to-life sound. Whatever. Coffee has teamed up with second-hand record store Vinyl Hero to host the “Live Record” pop-up in their Sham Shui Po coffee shop, showcasing over 300 records that are also available for sale.

While the revival of vinyl has been phenomenal in recent years, with global events such as Record Store Day encouraging the culture, in the 1980s vinyl was far from being cool or popular with the birth of cassette tape and then CD. Back then, Paul Au, the owner of Vinyl Hero, used to see vinyl records being discarded as rubbish on the streets. He would pick them up and keep them in his collection as a way of preserving the vinyl culture he loved. Eventually, he started to sell these second-hand records as a street vendor in Apliu Street, and then opened Vinyl Hero in 2003.

Currently, there are over 300,000 records in Paul’s collection, and he has hand-picked over 300 for the pop-up store, featuring big names such as the Beatles and Madonna, soundtracks to classic movies like Rocky, Star Wars, and The Sound of Music, Cantonese albums from the 1980s, and even records from Japanese singers and in other languages.

The pop-up store is open until 31 May so don’t miss your chance to find your next favourite record.
