The Mille Miglia Movie Star
1953 Ferrari 166 MM Spider

In its coming Paris auction, RM Sotheby’s will roll out a rare Ferrari 166 MM Spider. The “MM” in its name stands for “Mille Miglia”, one of the important motor racing competitions of the post war years, in which this particular car participated, in 1953 and 1954.

Built at the beginning of 1953, chassis number 0272 M was the fifth of the thirteen 166 MM chassis produced in Maranello that year and was bodied by Aurelio Lampredi. After it was sold new to Dr. Alberico Cacciari, the car was immediately entered into the Tour of Sicily before being lined up at Mille Miglia as car #514 and came third in its class. It was then sold to a new owner the next year and entered into Mille Miglia again as car #556, but for the purpose filming of the movie The Racers. 0272 M did not complete the race and was sent to California to continue filming.

The car has gone through multiple ownership changes and is no stranger to historic car racing and meetings. Currently its original V-12 is supported by an updated five-speed gearbox and other modern technical features such as an electronic ignition, but all the changes are reversible in order to convert the car back to its original setup. This exquisite race car has an estimate of 3.7 to 4.5 million Euros and will go under the hammer on this coming Wednesday, 7 February.
