The EVO That Was Never Made
Mercedes-Benz 190 EVO III concept

Collector car insurance company and automotive lifestyle platform Hagerty recently invited UK-based concept car artist Khyzyl Saleem to collaborate on a series titled Rendered with Kyza, in which Saleem creates a restomod version of the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II.

The first three places in the 1992 DTM championship were all Mercedes-Benz 190 EVO II, and while the model was often considered as one of the best compact sports saloons, it had a short production run with just 502 examples manufactured from 1990 to 1991, with all cars available exclusively in blue-black metallic.

Saleem’s digital concept is called the “190 EVO III”, and it explores what would happen if Mercedes continued the 190 EVO production for one more generation. The artist tries to stay true to the spirit of the original EVO II — the original body lines can still be seen but have been beefed up and modernised, featuring widened fenders and rear wing, aerodynamic elements, carbon fibre trims, and more. The aero-style centre-lock wheels are based on the original stock 190E design, while the square headlights with adjacent mint-coloured vents are simply perfect. Perhaps the most prominent change Saleem has made to the 190 EVO III is the conversion from four-door sedan to two-door coupe — and it works perfectly.
