The Darkened Red Planet
“Life on Mars” by Andrei Lacatusu

How human can migrate to Mars is something astronomists have been studying in recent years. One of the best advocates for Mars colonisation is definitely Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX. In February 2018 we saw SpaceX sending the red Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster towards Mars Orbit, with spacesuit-wearing mannequin “Starman” taking the driving seat. It didn’t turn out as planned, but Musk and his team is still working towards the goal of building a self-sustaining city on Mars by 2050. There are always different opinions towards such controversial issue, and Romanian digital artist Andrei Lacatusu shares his through his series of digital art simply titled “Life on Mars”.

In Lacatusu CG images, the Tesla Roadster has reached Mars and Starman is not just a mannequin but a real person, yet the overall atmosphere of the series is rather bleak. The surface of the Red Planet is covered with litters like beer bottles, fast food packaging and even bikini top, presumably left by space travellers. Starman is the only person in these images, siting alone on the cliff and by the dust-covered Tesla. The environment is unliveable as Starman still has his space helmet on. Lacatusu’s work may make you think twice about migrating to Mars, and perhaps shift the focus back to the planet we are living on.
