The Beauty of Sharing
Volkswagen Sedric concept

Volkswagen unveiled the latest version of the Sedric, its first fully autonomous driving electric car, at last week’s Frankfurt Motor Show. First debuted at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the automaker presented an updated version closer to the one being rolled out in a few cities in 2021.

The name is an abbreviation of “self-driving car” and at Level 5, Sedric can operate without human intervention, hence there is no steering wheel or pedals on board. The concept is designed for vehicle sharing in which users can call up the one anytime on the Volkswagen OneButton digital assistant platform. They also estimated that each person could save around 38,000 hours of driving time.

The self driving system will be equipped with identification of the surrounding environment with cameras, 360-degree lidar sensors, long and short-distance radar and ultrasound sensors and powerful computer and intelligent software. Volkswagen stresses that Sedric is a cross-brand ideas platform and will not rule out sharing information with other brands. The Sedric family will also extend into other concepts such as sports cars, luxurious touring saloons, lightweight commercial vehicles and trucks.
