The Beast of the Green Hell
Mercedes-AMG GT R

Among the eye-catching new cars debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, was the “The Beast of the Green Hell”, the Mercedes-AMG GT R.

Being the high-performance variant of the 2015 Mercedes-AMG GT (and GT S), the GT R is 90kg lighter and features the same M178 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine used in both models, but with power increased from 503hp to 577hp, and torque increased from 650Nm to 700Nm. The GT R has a top speed of 318 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, faster than the GT S by 8km/h and 0.2 seconds respectively.

The GT R also departs from the standard GT with an all-new chassis, active suspension, rear-wheel steering, and up to nine settings for the traction control. There are also several cosmetic changes as well, including the larger front grille with vertical slats, a fixed rear wing, new front air intakes and wider front and rear fenders, last but not least the ingenious under chassis active aerodynamics. Now comparable to the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car, the GT R can be seen as AMG’s adaptation of that car to a road car version which is suitable for everyday use. The GT R will go on sale in November 2016, with deliveries expected in 2017.
