Terrain Taming Trio
Land Rover Defender Limited Edition

Launched in 1948, nearly two million of Land Rover’s tank-like Defender have rolled off the production lines in the Midlands. Unlike most of today’s SUVs, the Defender began its life as a farm tractor and then was re-imagined as a uncompromising tool of exploration; just as poised on the baked terrain of Olduvai Gorge as leading a convoy through a storm to reach NordKapp, at the top of Europe. Along the way, the Defender acquired a cult following among mud-loving off-road enthusiasts, who followed the mantra of “If you know what you’re doing, there’s not much that will stop this thing.”

Land Rover will halt Defender production in 2015 and is paying homage to its icon with a trio of new limited edition commemorative Defender models that reflect its strength and breadth of character.

Leading off is the Heritage Edition, limited to only 400 units. It has been created as a modern reinterpretation of the original pre-production Series I model, which first debuted in 1947. Traditional features include Grasmere Green metallic paint and a white roof, plus a heritage-style grille, headlamp surrounds and heavy-duty steel wheels along with other vintage exterior details. Inside is a full range of luxury modern finishes, including Almond Resolve cloth upholstery, a perforated leather on the steering wheel and gear lever, rubber floor mats and a padded storage box.

The Autobiography Edition promises a seriously padded environment for more urban adventures. Just 80 examples will be available in the UK, outfitted with premium Windsor leather seats, a unique two-tone body finish, LED headlamps, a special 16-inch gloss black Sawtooth alloy wheels and machined aluminum details on the bonnet, door handles and filler cap. Power has also been boosted by 28bhp to a capable 148bhp.

Finally, Land Rover’s Adventure Edition Defender aims to combine the model’s impressive off-road credentials with a contemporary appearance. Available in three striking metallic colours, including orange, with contrasting black finish on the grille, bonnet and roof, the Adventure Edition sports new underbody protection, high-grip Goodyear MT/R tyres, a roof rack, snorkel and rear access ladder, all sure to help the Defender waddle easily through water crossings, wetting all five wheels, while keeping the driver’s Wellingtons dry.
