Tackle at the source
Dyson to launch electric car by 2020

The electric car market is getting more competitive with non-traditional automakers tapping into the field, the latest being British household appliance maker Dyson. Announced in an email to employees, founder James Dyson said that the company “has begun work on a battery electric vehicle, due to be launched by 2020”.

The company has already built a team of over 400 people, using top Dyson engineers and experts from the automotive industry. The team will be working in the facilities at Malmesbury and Hullavington in the UK and the company is still hiring aggressively. James Dyson plans to invest over £2 billion into the electric car project. He expects it to grow quickly but will not share further information due to the competitive nature of the industry.

The news may come as a surprise but it is worth noting that Dyson has always paid attention to pollution coming from vehicles. The company began to develop a cyclonic diesel exhaust filter back in 1990 but at that time there was not enough interest to put it into production. Dyson has remained innovative and developed new battery technologies, digital motors and energy storage systems since. Now is the time for the company to pool all these resources into one project and solve the vehicle pollution problem at the source.
