Formula 1 unveils concepts for 2021 race car

Formula 1 has revealed not just one but three concepts for the 2021 race car. These concepts are meant to serve as a first look only and the design will continue to evolve over the next year, still, we are able to see the direction F1 is heading to.

The look of the race car and the ability of increase the chances of great fights are both high on the design brief. “When we started looking at the 2021 car, the primary objective was to enable the cars to race well together,” says Formula 1 motorsport boss Ross Brawn. “Once the cars get within a few car lengths of each other, they lose 50% of their downforce. That’s a substantial amount of performance lost. So we set about understanding why that was and how we can improve it. I’m pleased to say we’re at about 80%.”

In terms of the three concepts, the first one shows how the halo cockpit protection device can be better integrated and thus become less of an eye sore. The second concept is the more aggressive and extreme one, showcasing the 18-inch wheels that F1 are committed to use in the future. The aerodynamicists and graphic designers have made use of this route to create the best looking options out of the three. The third and last one is the “most current” one that shows the first signs of devices to control the way the airflow comes of the wheels.
