Still Shining Bright
Dyson Cu-Beam Duo LED light

LED light was invented over 60 years ago; it’s a technology that has never encountered bottlenecks and is still evolving to this day. Last year, Jake Dyson of Dyson invented the CSYS desk light which, when combined with an effective cooling system – heat pipe technology – can last for up to 37 years, setting it apart very clearly from most other household products. As a follow-up, Dyson just launched the Cu-Beam Duo, a large fixture light for offices and public spaces that lasts for 22 years using the same CSYS technology.

The long lifespan of the Cu-Beam Duo is again thanks to heat pipe technology derived from the CSYS desk light. Standard LEDs are damaged easily and usually it is due to heat not being dissipated quickly enough, resulting in weakened or damaged LED chips. Heat pipe technology turns water inside the tubes into vapour that allows the heat energy to dissipate much more efficiently, thus dramatically increasing the LED’s lifespan. In the Cu-Beam Duo, six vacuum-sealed tubes are connected to a series of aluminium fins.

Cooling function aside, the Cu-Beam Duo combines two separate units of LEDs, one facing up and one facing down. With the built-in detector, users can adjust the lighting ratio to suit different purposes. For example, one can direct more light downward to illuminate the table for note-taking, while directing more light upward to the ceiling will fill the room in less direct light. This flexibility and the system’s longevity make the Cu-Beam Duo far superior than your typical, rigid office lighting system.
