Sketchbooks of costume designs for Star Wars and more for auction

Costume design plays an important role in any film and  TV series, as it is key for portraying characters through his or her appearance. It also contributes to the overall aesthetics. Oscar winning costume designer John Mollo was the man responsible for building the characters in cinematic epics such as Star Wars, Gandhi, Alien and Chaplin, to name a few, and his personal notebooks and sketchbooks will be offered by Bonhams in an auction.

Titled “Designing an Empire”, the auction taking place in London on 11 December consists of 73 lots. Many of these A3 sketchbooks contain a wealth of drawings, notes and designs, illustrating the thought process during the creation of highly recognisable costumes like Darth Vader, Han Solo and Chewbacca from Star Wars, and the space suits and creatures from Alien. In addition to the appearance, Mollo also worked on the mechanical side of the costumes, such as how Darth Vader’s helmet would allow the actor to breathe. The level of detail in his works set him apart and paved his way to iconic status in Hollywood.
