Siam Discovery
Nendo

Shortly after their exhibition of the “50 manga chairs” at the Milan Furniture Fair, the famous Japanese design studio Nendo was commissioned by Siam Discovery, to renovate both the interiors and the exteriors of their Bangkok-based mall.

As Nendo’s biggest commissioned project, the 2-decade old, 40,000 square meter Siam Discovery site hosts over 5,000 brands. However, the mall suffered from being too narrow, which made it difficult for the mall to attract tourists. Since it’s renovation by Nendo, however, Siam Discovery has an entirely different vibe. Its exterior wall consists of 220 box-frames housing separate screens. Not only does the design give off a dazzling sci-fi look, but it also displays a variety of goods which are available in the mall. As for the interior, Nendo has opted for a division based not on the brand, but on the concept of a “Lifestyle Laboratory” created through 13 thematic spaces including the Lab, the Street Lab, the Creativity Lab and other experimental zones. Not only has this introduced a new shopping experience, but also makes the project a fantastic piece of installation art for their shoppers; for example, Nendo has also used elements such as DNA sequences, microscopes, and amoeba as their visual concepts.
