Shaping The Rhythm of Daily Life
Balmuda The Clock

We live in a world filled with constant connectivity, but Balmuda’s latest creation, The Clock, is designed not just to tell the time. Taking a quieter, more human approach, it shapes the rhythm of the day, gently guiding different moments in daily life.

For this project, Balmuda founder Gen Terao collaborated with LoveFrom, the American creative collective founded by Jony Ive. Its compact aluminium form is simple but filled with meticulous attention to detail. The 75 mm-wide clock features a distinctive display: hours are expressed through softly pulsing numerals, while minutes and seconds are indicated by an outer ring of LED light.

The functionality of the clock is built around daily rituals, from waking, focus and rest. The alarm is designed to wake users gradually, beginning with ambient sounds that increase in volume over three minutes. Users can also make use of the built-in timer, which introduces white noise to aid focus and mask background distractions. In contrast, the “Relax Time” mode transforms the device into a source of ambient atmosphere, with soundscapes ranging from rainfall to flowing water and soft piano, creating a calm and immersive environment for unwinding. One of the sounds listed on the website is even the streets of Milan, with the sound of the bells of Milan Cathedral.

The Clock is supported by the dedicated Connect app, allowing users to customise alarms, select sound profiles and manage multiple settings. Despite its compact size, The Clock comprises more than 200 components and has a carefully tuned stereo sound system, while a crown-inspired dial at the top offers intuitive interaction reminiscent of a classic pocket watch. Pre-orders have now started at JPY 59,400, with delivery expected in May.
