If we were to count, the film “Aliens” is almost three decades old. Its screenplay and special effects were revolutionary at the time, building it as a precedent in the genre of space-horror movies, influencing pop cultures and other movies now in the 21st century. Recently, Seiko launched the “Seiko × Giugiaro Spirit Smart” series, using the 7A28-7000 and 7A28-7009 as its framework for the new model, which became the SCED035 and SCED037. These watches that appeared in “Aliens” were heavily sought after and can be identified as the film’s alternative influence on popular culture.
Giorgetto Giugiaro is no stranger to car enthusiasts. Giugiaro was the engineer behind some of the most iconic designs by Ferrari, Porsche and BMW, having collaborated with Seiko during the 80’s for the design of the Speedmaster wristwatch. The most famous model in that collection – the matte gray 7A28-7000 and the matte black 7A28-7009. Its avant-garde appearance was admired by director James Cameron, resulting in Sigourney Weaver, the main protagonist in “Aliens”, being chosen to wear it. This has since coined a nickname for the timepiece – the “Aliens watch”.
As the world’s first quartz movement watch powered by a reassembled analog chronography, the SCED035 and SCED037 utilises the Caliber 7T12 movement, crafted in stainless steel and given a black dial, orange and yellow hands, as well as the signature chronograph button design. The SCED035 shown in the images above is the re-issue, which in comparison to the original 7A28-7001 Giugiaro has its crown hidden behind the chronograph buttons instead of being placed on the left, making the lines on the design even cleaner. In addition, where the original 7A28-7001’s 30 min and 10 hours were given a time button; the SCED035, has been upgraded to 60 minutes and 12 hours, along with an accompanying date display. This not only retains the original model’s futuristic style, but also optimises the watch’s features to its fullest.
The Seiko SCED035 and SCED037 is now on sale and limited to 3000 pieces globally. Priced at USD $260 and $285 respectively, this remake is definitely a great choice for those who do not wish to purchase the pricey first editions and insist on owning a highly functional day-to-day timepiece.
