Ray Of Light
Eye Know by Hiroshi Kondo

Japanese short film director, Hiroshi Kondooften uses the city as his theme to illustrate the isolation of the people who live in our densely populated metropolis. He shoots daily life and accurately highlights the ecology which we often overlook and take for granted.

This video piece entitled “Eye Know” is a continuation of his signature style, presenting illusions and flipping between what is real and what is not, by inducing split screens and other visual distortions. Using a moving path as his core subject, he has selected Tokyo as his starting point and created a journey from the driver’s perspective. When we drive at night, we move with the light, as if it is a constant habit activated without the need of a reflex. We follow the light carefully as we travel along the designated path. As we quickly pass each light point, it gradually connects into a line. The street lights become a kaleidoscope-like image that expands in front of our eyes as the car continues it’s journey along the route. The scenery which we can’t pay attention to while we are driving is included in this clip. Accompanied by a piano piece by Ayako Taniguchi, the video becomes an ensemble of the fantastic, nighttime urban scape.
