Races For The Classics
77th Goodwood Members’ Meeting

Over the past weekend in West Sussex, England, the 77th Goodwood Members’ Meeting once again delivered a thrilling historic race event since its revived in 2014. Unlike Goodwood Revival, modern machines after 1966 are welcomed in the Member’s Meeting, therefore automotive rarities from a couple of decades are also seen on the circuit.

Highlights of the weekend included demonstrations of NASCARs, BMW M1 Procars and modern Le Mans Prototypes. The 2003 Le Mans-winning Bentley Speed 8 clearly was the star of the Le Mans Prototypes demo, as race driver Tom Kristensen once again sat inside the winner car as it sprinted into the darkness on Saturday evening.

The inaugural Betty Richmond Trophy had given the Mini, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, the attention it deserves. A total of 60 classic, pre-1966 Minis were seen racing in two heats. The best 30 were gathered once again for the final. Former Formula 1 racer David Coulthard racing in the Mercedes-Benz 300SL ‘Gullwing’ was another surprise over the weekend. The 13-time Grand Prix winner claimed victory in the Tony Gaze Trophy race reserved for 1954 to 1959 road-going sports and GT cars.

What made Members’ Meeting such a special event was the diversity of the races. For example, the S.F. Edge Trophy race for Edwardian machinery offered some pleasant sights of a century’s old models that seldom seen in public, even in the museum. Some of the event joiners included an original Sunbeam once raced in the 1916 Indianapolis 500, a 1913 Vauxhall Viper Special and the 1909 ‘Blitzen Benz’ from the Auto & Technik Museum. Elsewhere, the Graham Hill Trophy offered us a glimpse of pre-1966 closed-cockpit GT cars including the original TVR Griffith.
